WEEK 1 -drawing time

 Studio week 1

one of the initial tasks I was asked to complete as masters students was to draw a line on a long piece of paper this was to help symbolise my position in the class with in my peers. it was interesting to see how everyone perceived this task as some people didn't just draw straight lines and they showed creativity and individuality.

we all then participated in a group activity where we meditated to clear our minds and help us be present and then listened to a piece of text about time and loss and spoke about important parts we found in the words, after this we meditated again before being allowed to draw using different materials and non conventional techniques. The idea of the exercise was to think in a different way and not be so rigid when drawing giving us complete freedom to show what time is to us without being literal. By using different senses such as touch, sound and sight it allowed me to think fluidly and not have an idea set in stone and made me trust the process. I believe I got fully immersed in this exercise and the notion of “time flies when having fun.” Due to continuously adding to my initial idea and developing it to the point the first drawing was no longer visible. Another thing it taught me was sometimes I overthink and just need to trust a process and embrace it even if it seems silly due to at first I felt like the exercise may have been immature but in the end actually taking a lot from it such as seeing everyone else’s ways of thinking.

Shown above is the text that inspired drawing what time would look like.

when I first saw the given objects I was intrigued to play with them in order to see how they would work and how my brain would use them in order to create a drawing to resemble what I perceived time to look like especially whilst being able to play.

although initially in my head you can see from above that when I was able to not be so literal and let go and just had fun what was originally quite tame and controlled became experimental and more abstract/free, this activity allowed me to realise I didn't always have to do what first comes to mind and things would develop overtime.

Comments

  1. Nice - I like the annotations on the enduring time text. Can you take a copy of this and use words poetically? If you bring it in tomorrow I can give you an exercise to do.
