To begin the session of this week we listened to a chapter of vibrant matter titled thing power 1: Debris written by Jane Bennett, whilst listening I picked up certain things that I found interesting such as the fact that we pick things up in sequences and one thing may lead us to seeing another such as in the text it mentions something reflecting onto something else and being seen which might not have usually been the case. this also reminded me similarly to something we all found whilst in Fratton doing a site visit we were supposed to be looking at details and our eyes were drawn to a dead rat which was ironic due to the text this week now being able to be linked back. Another key point I picked up was there are multiple different methods of reasoning such as deduction and inducted reasoning however the one we use the most is abduction which is seeing and understanding.

Dead rat photographed in Fratton which originally we all took a photo of to mock and laugh at however somehow has now managed to link back with a text.
After going through the text we discussed verbing nouns for example assemblage would become to assemble etc the reason this is important is so that when it comes to designing we think more about what the space is used for and who uses it instead of being so rigid by calling them things such as a kitchen.
We then spoke about how we would visit and understand a site first in pairs and then as a class shown below are the outcomes of this:
we then all discussed as a group to see how everyone else would approach this.
once completed we realised we could take only of these ideas and continue mind mapping and coming up with other possible answers so we worked in a pair again to expand on our initial ideas.
extended version focussing on how we could use senses to understand a site.
I then read some of Fred Scott - on altering architecture - stripping back and was interested in this piece of text.
Stripping back is here proposed as the theoretical basis for the work of
intervention and alteration. The work requires both intellect and intuition; the
investigation must be one of feeling as much as of analysis. It is an under-
standing that is cultural, physical and spatial.
Scott, F. (2007). On altering architecture (p. 113). Routledge
I found this particularly interesting as it says that in order to design you must be able to feel it and not just only use known facts to design from.
keywords Attuning - to make aware
Assemblage - a gathering of things, objects or people
