WEEK 7
Some of the posters caught my attention more than others due to the types of papers used, the techniques used such as drawings, sketches and painting. Finally the large graphics and materials made them more interesting to me as they became things I wanted to interact with and take a closer look.
some feedback on others artefacts in my class was that they needed to consider how the item will help them to translate ideas into there designs for the community centre for example thinking about the amount of air the thing has, the way it moves for example does it spin or open or close? what other senses could be used to improve the design to make it unique? other things that needed to be paid more attention to was the "score for movement" which is how would the item perform in the space and with the users.
based on some of the other items I felt that mine had similar characteristics to others such as allowing air to move throughout and be able to make sound/ use it as an instrument. some of the feedback I got for my object was that the first thing that people wanted to do was play with it due to the shapes used and how it was constructed such as banging on it. Furthermore they liked that it wasn't all rigid lines it had some organic shapes. They also noted the musicality of my object comparing it to a Xylophone. My peers also commented on the orientation and by changing it gave them the impression of Salvador Dali and the piece with the melting clocks mentioning that they were interested if over time the wood would begin to take the shape of the edges using the effects of gravity.Things they said could be improved upon was having things that moved like hinges etc to add more interest and make people want to interact more.
Some of the initial ideas that myself and people came up with for how this could impact my design for the community centre is potentially using levels/ heights or consider privacy due to the slatted nature of some parts of my item. In addition to this we also mentioned how I could include the other senses/ sound to enhance my design.
We then got into groups to plan the next steps and discussed how things were going to work over the next few upcoming weeks and figure out how the verbs we used could potentially help to drive our designs and elements we would want to incorporate.
We discussed potential methods of doing surveys and remembered a book mentioned by Belinda our lecturer on Wednesday and liked the possibility of exploring this as an option.
Halprin, L. (1970). The RSVP cycles: Creative processes in the human environment. George Braziller.
You use Dali as a reference and may therefore want to think about using Surrealist collage processes as a way into your design practice.
