WEEK 8

This week although we had no lecture my group and I spent some time in both the photography and design studios and taking a trip to Fratton in order to take some measurements and do some different types of insufficient mappings, drawings and scans, to make a start on our poster/section and take photos of our objects.

Rhythm, for Lefebvre, is something inseparable from understandings of time, in particular repetition. It is found in the workings of our towns and cities, in urban life and movement through space. Equally, in the collision of natural biological and social timescales, the rhythms of our bodies and society, the analysis of rhythms provides a privileged insight into the question of everyday life. Lefebvre takes a number of themes – the thing, the object, life in the urban or rural environment, the role of media, political discipline and the notion of dressage, and music, among others – and rethinks them through the notion of rhythm.

Lefebvre, H. (2004). Rhythmanalysis: Space, time, and everyday life. Monoskop. https://monoskop.org/images/d/d2/Lefebvre_Henri_Rhythmanalysis_Space_Time_and_Everyday_Life.pdf

Everyday the way we move etc and the tasks we do all have a Rhythm and reasoning such as walking up and down stairs, eating, opening and closing doors and many more. with this in mind we have to consider how functional the space is for the tasks that will happen within them.

whilst in the community centre we took more measurements in order to successfully draw the section in as much accurate detail so that we could the use this to complete the next part of the assignment, we also took photos, mapped the streets around Fratton and took more scans of areas that we would potentially work in.

One of the areas that I noticed could do with a lot of improvement is the bathrooms as someone who is part of the LGBTQ+ community it is important for me that everyone is represented or feels included and in the centre the bathrooms were gendered and outdated which I feel need to be changed and developed to match up with the new generations ways of thinking as people could be transgender or non binary and it should be obvious what bathrooms they can use this is why I wanted to do this part as my section.

The verbs my group have to use to work with is
  • to grow
  • to assemble
  • to shimmy
  • to collide
my groups verbs all interlink and work well together as growing/assembling can both be seen as something that increases in size and shimmy/collide are both movements. This should help my group being able to come up with a cohesive look. we took photos of our own objects and then also took photos as a group with all of our items to see how they all worked with each other and how they interact with each other which is what happens in the community centre (different people all coming together in one place.)

Once back in the studio we started trying to figure out how to present our section and we came up with the idea of flipping one of the sections so that we could also show the sky and ceiling along with everything else. we then all decided that we should just get stuff stuck down and work quite fluidly and overall we felt like this week was very productive. We had a few differences in opinions due to having different backgrounds however we communicated this all and worked well.

once spending the day in the studio I decided that I was inspired by the group working together all day that I wanted to use this as motivation and a driving force to work on my own poster adding images, materials and texts etc all for the submission and play with different ways of potentially presenting this for the deadline. shown below are just 2 examples.

By inverting the colours etc I found it interesting as it reminds me that no two people ever see the same thing in the same way whether it be design or anything else in life.

Finally I started pulling elements from my artefact and constructed what is almost a concept/mood board of how I want the space to feel and components that i'd like to incorporate such as shape, colours, tones and materials. I then played with how these could be shown.

first is the traditional white background, I found this to be quite plain and boring so I wanted to see if I could create more contrast whilst still showing what I wanted to achieve which I feel that the second image achieves whilst still having more drama and being more impactful.

Based on these I then proceeded to play around with different aspects and materiality to try and envision what this could potentially look like in a proper space, below Is an example I came up with which will also help the direction of my design for the area I'm working on improving.

PHOTOS FROM THE STUDIO
helped us to question what these would look like?
how would they drive our designs?
what would they sound like?
how do we interact with these?
